Aries Aries (ram), watercolor and ink on paper, from a manuscript created in Ulm or Augsburg, Germany, c. 1464; in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
Inastrology, Aries is the first sign of thezodiac, considered as governing the period from about March 21 to about April 19. Its representation as a ram is identified with the Egyptian godAmonand, inGreek mythology, with the ram with thegolden fleece, on the back of whichPhrixus, the son of King Athamas, safely fled Thessaly toColchis, where he sacrificed the ram toZeus, who placed it in the heavens as theconstellation. The ram’s golden fleece was recovered byJason, leader of theArgonauts.
